MA10S - MA12S engine.

The Nissan Micra K10 (first generation, 1982–1992) with the MA10 engine (1.0 liter carbureted, 50 hp) is a simple, reliable but aging engine. When it starts to hesitate (stuttering, jerking, power loss during acceleration, irregular idling, or misfire-like behavior), these are the most common causes for this engine type (based on classic Micra K10 issues and forum experiences):

Top 5 causes (check in roughly this order):

  1. Carburetor problems (by far the #1 cause on the MA10)
    • Clogged jets, stuck float, incorrectly adjusted idle mixture screw, or faulty choke mechanism.
    • Symptoms: hesitation especially when cold starting, accelerating, or at idle.
    • Solution: clean the carburetor (with carb cleaner), blow through the jets, check/adjust the float, or use a rebuild kit (usually in stock with us).
  2. Vacuum leaks
    • Cracked vacuum hoses (to brake booster, PCV valve, distributor advance, or choke), loose connections, or leaking intake manifold gasket.
    • Symptoms: irregular idle, hesitation when pressing the throttle, higher idle speed.
    • Solution: inspect and replace all vacuum hoses (very common and inexpensive on old cars).
  3. Ignition issues (timing and components)
    • Incorrect ignition timing (too advanced or retarded).
    • Worn spark plugs, ignition cables, distributor cap, rotor, or points (if still mechanical).
    • Symptoms: hesitation under load, backfiring, or misfiring during acceleration.
    • Solution: replace plugs and cables, clean distributor, check timing with timing light (standard setting: 10° BTDC at idle).
  4. Fuel delivery problems
    • Clogged fuel filter, dirty fuel tank, weak mechanical fuel pump, or stuck float needle in the carburetor.
    • Symptoms: hesitation especially at full throttle or higher speeds.
    • Solution: replace fuel filter, clean tank, test pump pressure.
  5. Air intake / EGR / choke
    • Stuck automatic choke (stays on when warm).
    • Dirty or stuck EGR valve (if fitted).
    • Symptoms: hesitation when warm or poor cold starting.
    • Solution: check/clean choke mechanism, clean or disable EGR if it’s faulty.

Practical diagnostic order:

  1. First check all vacuum hoses for cracks/loose connections (most common and cheapest fix).
  2. Clean the carburetor (solves about 70% of MA10 hesitation issues).
  3. Replace spark plugs + cables and verify timing. usually in stock with us.
  4. Test fuel supply if the above doesn’t help.

This engine is very basic (no ECU, no fuel injection, no sensors like later models), so most issues are mechanical or carburetor-related and inexpensive to fix. If it still hesitates after cleaning, it could be a worn distributor or intake manifold gasket.
